Jury Selection Begins Today For Memphis Man Accused of Ambushing Southaven Police Officer

HERNANDO, MS – District Attorney Matthew Barton is pursuing a life sentence for the attempted murder of a Southaven Police Officer who was ambushed by Kyle Dodson of Memphis in the early hours of on March 22, 2023.

A pool of jurors are expected to be selected Monday, and the trial could get underway as early as this afternoon. The trial is expected to close this week.

Kyle Dodson is charged with attempted murder in connection with an auto burglary in progress that began in Southaven and led cops into Memphis.

According to reports, Southaven police encountered a stolen Nissan Maxima in Southaven that led to the discovery of another auto burglary in progress. The officer attempted to deploy stop sticks to stop the Nissan Maxima when he was ambushed with gunfire by Kyle Dodson, who was in the process of stealing a second Nissan Maxima.

A security doorbell camera across the street caught the shootout, which resulted in Dodson being shot in the ankle. The other assailants fled the scene but were later arrested.

Kyle Dodson has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Memphis Police Department, the U.S. Marshals, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and District Attorney’s Office assisted Southaven with the investigation.
