Hernando, Miss. – DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton announced today that John Riles, an inmate at the DeSoto County Adult Detention Center, has been indicted by a DeSoto County Grand Jury for assaulting a jailer last month. [1]
On November 14, at approximately 10:45 a.m., Riles became involved in an altercation with a jailer. During the incident, Riles tased the jailer, causing minor injuries. The jailer was treated for the injuries and Riles was immediately charged for his actions.
District Attorney Barton emphasized the seriousness of the charges and his office’s commitment to protecting law enforcement and first responders. “Attacking law enforcement officers or first responders in DeSoto County will not be tolerated,” said Barton. “My office will continue to be tough on anyone who attempts to harm those who risk their lives to protect and serve our community. This is a dangerous and violent crime, and we will utilize the full extent of the law to hold offenders accountable.”
Riles, who was already incarcerated on separate charges, now faces additional charges for assaulting a law enforcement officer. The case will proceed through the legal system, with the District Attorney’s Office fully committed to ensuring justice is served.
