District Attorney Matthew Barton proudly serves Mississippi’s third and fastest growing county, encompassing 5 cities and over 185,000 residents. He is the youngest and first-ever Republican elected District Attorney in the county’s history. Since assuming office in January 2024, his primary objective has been to protect and serve the families of DeSoto County through principles of integrity and professionalism.
Aside from overseeing the day-to-day operations of the DA’s Office, DA Barton is deeply committed to pursuing justice for victims and supporting the brave law enforcement officers who protect our communities. He prioritizes tough on crime initiatives that put violent criminals behind bars and preventive measures that reduce recidivism and foster safer communities for those who call DeSoto County home.
Matthew was born and raised in Petal, Mississippi in a blue-collar family. His mother was a director at Tupperwear and his father owned the small, family business, Barton Fence Company, where he worked growing up. After attending public school, Matthew attended Pearl River Community College and Warner University, where he studied Business Administration. He holds a law degree form Ole Miss Law, where he graduated Cum Laude and recieved the interviewing and counseling award.
Prior to being elected as District Attorney of the Twenty Third Judicial District, Matthew served as a special prosecutor for Southaven, Horn Lake, and DeSoto County Justice Courts – where he established a strict, tough on crime reputation.
Matthew is a veteran attorney with experience in more than 40 courts across Mississippi. He is a member of the the Federalist Society, The Mississippi Bar, The Mississippi Prosecutor’s Association, a enhanced conceal carry permit holder, NRA member, and has donated his time serving as a pro bono attorney to Veterans in years past.
